If you fly you need one now. Land and sea crossings for Canadians, Americans and Mexicans is currently expected sometime in the summer of 2008. Can't give a specific date as it keeps changing. It has been postponed a couple of times, and have left it open to future postponements. They can't keep up with the demand for passports.

By the way, this is the US set dates - there is no difference, nor will there be a difference in requirements crossing into Canada or crossing back into the US.

You don't give specifics on where you are coming from. If you are coming from the US via LAND or SEA then you do not need a passport until Summer 2008 as well as returning into the US. You just need a gov't ID card and a birth certificate. But if you are coming by AIR then you do need a passport as of Jan 07.

No, but new law requires you will need a passport to get back into the US. This is the case unless of course you are a mexican trying to mooch off the system. Seriously though, I work for a cruise line and everyone now needs passports even if they are going to mexico where they didnt before.

You don't need one to enter Canada, photo i.d. is enough as long as you are coming from the U.S. If you are coming from any other country, you do need one. If you will be going back to the U.S., you do need one.
