I'm considering joining the Air Force. I understand the need to place recruits in positions that need filling. I scored a 98 on my asvab and I'm wondering what my chances are of getting a job in television and broadcasting/still photography/visual information. I've heard that there is a large influx of people joining the air force and that it is difficult to get a guaranteed job. I have a lot of experience in photojournalism from high school and a couple years of college. Will this help my chances of getting that position?

You have a good test score so that is not the problem rather it will be a situation of partly being lucky. There are only so many of those slots in the service (any service) and they are few in number so that is one big factor. Secondly for television and broadcasting type jobs there is an interview and a voice test that they also give to potential candidates to weed out those that don't have good speaking voices and good diction. The ones that score poorly on that are relegated to the technical-non speaking type support jobs and those are few in number as well. Your experience in photojournalism may get you a job in public affairs or in still photography although the photography area has really changed with digital equipment and outsourcing in the last several years and that field has been cut back drastically.

There are other jobs in the military that are dynamic and great to do so check out a number of different ones in case you have a shot at one of those fields or areas instead of the ones you mentioned above. When I joined in 1972 I wanted to do the same thing and instead went into aeromed and did that for 23 years and then something else the last 11 and enjoyed all 34 years and have no regrets about not making it into those other areas or jobs. Good luck.

I haven't been in for a while, but that was a hard field to get into when I was in. I had several friends that were in it and combat camera, they really liked it. If you are set on just doing that, don't go unless you have it guaranteed. If you go open general, I would put money on you not getting it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the AF and would do it again in a heart beat! I was in 22 years and it went by real quick. You may want to look at the intelligence field too. You do allot of research and writing in that job as well. Not quite the same, but your skills would do you well!

Good luck and enjoy what ever you do!

get it in writing on your contract or don't swear in or sign the thing. It is OK to ask for a job and walk away if it is not available. Get on a waiting list with your recruiter or give an open mind to other fields. We do some neat stuff in the USAF and you qual for every job available. Look them over carefully. What you want would be considered totally non-functional to most of the USAF and a waste. Try a local TV station or newspaper if that is what you want, beats waiting for a call that may never come.

With a 98, you can get any job you want!! Don't come in without a guaranteed job, if your recruiter is telling you it's harder to do that, don't listen. Please take my advice on that one!! Also, Public Affairs does a lot of photography, journalism stuff. They are the ones who do the base newspapers, as well as public relationship with the local community.

It will depend on how many are already waiting for classes. There are only so many slots that need filled. You never know, they may have something that will actually fit you much better and won't be so competitive on the outside. Something you can actually make money at. In other words, stay open, you may just be surprised.
