Thick film technology is part of integrated circuit work. Normally, the layers of doped semiconductor are rather thin and easy to make with gaseous diffusion. But it has been found that there are good reasons for making thick films/layers - for example etching to form strain gages, accelerometers, compasses, etc. where a mechanical element and its measuring method are made in the layer. Also, several biological measuring methods (of gases, poisons, etc.) become possible with a thick film into which sensitive compounds are introduced. Thick films are harder to make.

it is an additive process that utilizes screen printing methods to apply conductive, resistive, and insulating films, intially in the form of a viscous paste, onto a ceramic substrate in the desired pattern. the films are subsequently dried and fired at an elevated temperature to active the adhesion mechanism to the substrate.
