It can be a revolver or a pistol cartridge but rimfire cartridges do not count. Centerfire only. Also, I am not interested in rifle or shotgun cartridges. Handgun only. Please only state one cartridge as I can only accept one answer for this poll I am taking.
Thanks.

Mine is .38 special. I'll tally all the votes for this question in a few days and we'll see what cartridge wins. Looks like the .45ACP is the early leader.

The 1911 in .45 Auto is my favorite by far. I also enjoy shooting the .38 Super versions. I have a couple of Springfields myself. The Loaded model was my first one. I also have a Mil-Spec that I had the Professional Package done on for $1,800. And I also have a regular TRP without the rail. And then I've got my own customized Mil-Spec. Have a Colt XSE 1911, a Series 70 GCNM, Kimber Tactical Custom II, Kimber TLE II, Springfield EMP 9mm, and a Kimber Pro Carry II .45. I tend to prefer the Kimber and Springfield models myself. The Colt XSE I got because I wanted to try out a Colt and I was looking for one with a rail. The Gold Cup was an old Series 70 I found for sale at a Gander Mountain that needed a little brightening up so I fixed it up. Had a worn out bushing (I replaced the "collet style" with a newer Colt version and put a new Colt GC barrel in it). Colt barrels are usually made pretty well. Then I had it re-blued and had a deburring job done on it and it's fun to shoot. And pretty much all my 1911s except the GC are carry ready. The GC is hard to carry cuz it's got a target sight. Another gun I have that I really like is my old 1970s 4" Colt Python .357 Magnum. I also really like the Beretta 92FS. Just feels smooth in my hand. And 9mm will work effectively with good hollowpoint rounds. The Heckler & Koch USP is another one that I thought was really well made. It feels weird in my hands though because I'm used to the smaller grip of my Python or my 1911s. Even the Beretta feels weird. But what really makes the USP feel wierd is the trigger guard. It's built really big so you can shoot the gun with thick gloves on. It was originally designed for military and SWAT team usage. One tweak I think they could make to it is to make the trigger guard a little smaller if you want it made that way. It's just an odd feel when you're used to like any other handgun with a smaller trigger guard.

Damn! That is a tough question!!

I'm hard pressed to decide between the .357 Magnum and the .44 S&W Spl.

But if I gotta take just one, I'll go with the .44 S&W SPL. The .44 SPL is as versatile as the .357 Magnum, and it is of a larger caliber. In strong revolvers, you can load the .44 SPL to near .44 RemMag power and velocity, or you can load it down to mild target velocity.

My all time favorite is the 9mm Parabellum. The reason is it's versatility, as evidenced by the huge number of proven weapons that are chambered for it. It is an even powered round capable for use as a self defense round, a military round and a hunting round. It is equally comfortable in a weapon at the range, in a police situation or under fire.

While it lacks the knock down power of some of the larger caliber rounds it is easy for just about anyone to handle the weapons chambered for this round and ammunition is relatively inexpensive to buy or reload.

Hands down my favorite round!

I vote for the 44 mag no1#, and .357 mag no2#

All those other rounds are nice for police work and home protection. But as a hunter and fisherman what I need is a versatile handgun. One I can stop a bear with and yet shoot a grouse or rabbit for dinner and yet some thing the wife can protect herself with.
The 44 mag can shoot light .44 special cowboy rounds to take grouse and other game. And then be loaded with heavy magnum rounds to stop most nasty critters who want to eat or kill you.
And you can even shoot bird shot in .44 mag to take out the rat at 10 feet with out blowing a hole through the barn.
Even empty its weight is enough to knock the tar out of some one. lol
Lastly it can be used as a non-lethal devise. As in stopping a fight; the sound of that 44 mag roaring will definitely get their attention unless they are out of their minds on drugs or booze.

for hunting, a .44 mag, in a gun with at least a 7" barrel

personal protection, a .45 apc, has great knock down power

for concealed carry, a small 9mm

44 Special
This will be an interesting poll once you get past 45 ACP, 9mm Parabellum and 357 Magnum.

.357 Magnum in a revolver. You can load it to 1200+ FPS, which is very potent for hunting, and any .357 revolver will also shoot .38 Special, which is very inexpensive, very accurate, and has almost no recoil.

My fav is my 5 1/2" Ruger Redhawk with express sights and magnaporting fireing 300gr. XTPs over a stiff charge of 296, good for 1350 fps at the chrono. I use it for everything from coyotes to elk &bear. And yes I own lots of others but you said fav.

.357 Mag. - Nothing is more versatile if you include all .38 Special rounds which can be fired in this gun.
