I am a college student. I want to be a seventh grade social studies teacher, but I have been feeling the need to serve my country. I have considered the guard, and I want to teach, but I feel like I won't be giving my all going into the guard. Hopefully some people with experience can help me out with this question.

National guard get sent to Iraq just like active duty do. So I would say guard is the way to go. You can get your monthly paycheck for your drill and you get good experience. Then after you finish school and feel the need to go active duty then go and you might be able to get your student loans paid off.

I did the guard thing first and really liked it. It allowed me to be in the military and have a direct impact on my community with some of our projects. We also did a lot with sheriff departments helping them out on drug raids and stuff.

One thing you need to remeber you only have medical coverage while at drill or your two weeks in the summer.

The national guard would be a good choice. It will help pay for your education and you can still serve. Don't feel like you won't be giving your all. Right now there are my NG soldiers over seas then Active Duty (or more NG going over seas I can't remember which it is). So there is a good chance you can be called to serve. Even of you don't deploy anytime soon- you'll be training once a month 2 weeks out of the year and don't forget, the NG does help out on the home front during natural disasters or for some reason if some crazy riot breaks out etc... I have been told, if in the reserves, expect to deploy at LEAST once in your life. I think it's true. I am getting ready to go.

Active duty armed forces.

Why?

Every conflict, the guard goes in first. With second hand equipment, 2 weeks out of the year training, and they suffer for it.

Why?

Becasue it takes much longer to mobilize the Army than it does the Guard. Still, the Guard suffers.

Try the State Guard. Even Clark Howard is in the Guard. You can serve and finish your education.

Any branch of the Armed services are good for you, the question is do you think National Guard is the right choice for yourself, only you can answer that really

Thank you for wanting to serve.

But only you can decide which is best for you.

I chose 22 years on active duty, others chose a tour with the guard.

One is as important as the other.

Best of luck in what ever you choose.
