While it is perfectly acceptable for you to make that decision for yourself, it is not acceptable for you to make that decision for others. Some people find it especially joyful to send cards.
It would be a good idea to send e-cards to everyone with a note as to why you are doing it. If you are doing it early enough, they may choose to do the same. Ultimately, you can not and should not try to control them though.

there are a couple ways to handle this.
1. say, in a nice tone of voice, "if you wouldn't mind, i would rather not receive christmas cards this year. however, i would be delighted if you would send me an email or e-card, or give me a call.
2. recycle the cards. there are all kinds of projects you can find on the internet and take a little time to make, such as boxes, ornaments, puzzles, etc.
3. send them an e-card first and hope that they read between the lines. or, mention it in the message, which would be a little nicer.
do what you want, but be sure not to offend the senders. and be sure to wish them a merry christmas!

Your beliefs are fine - but you cannot push them onto other people. in this case, telling people that you think cards are a waste of paper and fuel will be taking the joy out of the holdiay tradition for them. So, if you receive a card recycle it as best possible and just reply with an email greeting. Once people see that you don't respond with a paper card you will likely be crossed off their holdiay card list and won't have this trouble next year.

On the other hand, it helps give seasonal employment to thousands of postal workers.
Recycle the cards and envelopes, cut out the stamps and use them to decorate a homemade card for next year and thank Heaven that you have family and friends who care SO much about you that they keep you on their card list!
E-mail will NEVER be a suitable replacement for true correspondence. There's just something incomparable about holding a hand-written card or letter with someone's thoughts written by them to you.

Unless you are a big tree-hugger, and I am not saying that's a bad thing, I would just let it go. Some people are just really into the whole card thing. I know that some of my older family members think Christmas isn't the same without them. I would rather let them go on sending them for fear of offending one of mine.

I always tell people at work that I don't want gifts and to make a donation to a worthy cause instead. Nobody takes my advise.
It's their thing, and they enjoy doing it (hopefully). Meanwhile, you could always recycle the cards. A friend of mine made placemats and uses it every Christmas.
I 've made gift tags with the last years cards.
Picture frames
Ornaments / decorations
Shred it for stuffing a box

I love getting Christmas cards too. I love sending them ! I have never found a way to "get" people to send me Christmas cards, but i do love to go ahead and send them to everyone i love and am in aquaintance with. If I get one back from them, its a cool thing! If not, i think i have given them some Christmas Cheer, and to me, that matters more than anything. I think emails are ok, but personally? I love the cards too. Send me your address! I'll send ya one! lol. and Merry Christmas!!!!

Just tell them that in the interest of environmental concerns for the trees on this planet, you will no longer be accepting cards, not just for Christmas, but Birthday and all other types as well. Nor letters. Ask them to please send you an email or give you a call instead.

SEnd them an email saying "Dear loved one, I would appreciate it if you could all send me e-cards instead of snail mail cards in order to be environmentally friendly, saves you money too."

Just send them emails saying this year you prefer to do Christmas via email...and you hope they understand. Then wish them all a Merry Christmas!
