For a Self-Defense handgun a Ruger 357 Magnum will be an excellent choice (You didn't mention what Model Number...). The 357 Magnum gives you the option of using 357 Magnum ammunition or any 38 Special +P+ ammunition on the market today. Ruger makes quality handguns.....

Probably the best choice for a first self-defense gun. The 357 is an excellent SD round, and any revolver chambered for it will also shoot the .38 special which is a good target round for the beginning handgunner such as yourself to get used to the feel of the gun. Also, the Ruger has a bit more heft to it than its competitors, so even full-power 357 mag loads will be more managable for you. Another plus for the novice. You've got a winner.

Yes, this is a good deal. If it is a snubby, it is probably the 5 shot Ruger SP101. The gun an excellent starter gun, capable of firing the .357 Mag round and light .38 Spl. rounds interchangeablely.

I would suggest a 357 mag stubby for self defense. That is an average price and plus rugers are great guns. You can practice with 38 specials so you don't wear out your arms and hands. Then load it with the 357Mag's when you need it for self defense. I would say go for it.

first of all, is this self defense in the home? or are you going to be carrying the pistol? If it is for home or such; I would recomend a shot gun! don't have to aim, just shoot and is much more effective. the 357 is a very good round. look around and compare prices.

Good choice and great price. Brand new by me is 550. (Chicago-land). It will also give you the choice of two different calibers. .357 and the .38 special.
I myself do not shoot well with revolvers so I prefer semi-autos. I recently sold my Beretta 9mm at a shop and debating on buying a Ruger GP100 to get my feet more wet with revolvers. I have commitment issues though....lol

You are describing the Ruger SP101 revolver. Great choice at an unbelievable price. Your dealer is giving it to you at cost. Don't pass it up.

Yes to both questions. It is a good gun at a good price. And you can shoot .38 specials out of it so the recoil is will be mild.

Absolutely, you are good to go, however I prefer the 4" barrel myself.* I prefer the Smith & Wesson Brand myself.* I think you would be happier with a 4" barrel.*
