Some of the complexities arise due to the way electricity is consumed. During the middle of the night, relatively little electricity is used. When people start waking up, going to work, turning on their air conditioners, etc, usage increases and can increase rapidly. The grid is managed so that there is normally enough power to handle the varying load. Sometimes, due to human error, mechanical breakdown, or natural events (like solar flares, ice storms, etc), the system can become overloaded and the operators have to shut things down to protect the system or the system has a major failure.
