When I don't feel like messing around with cookie cutters, re-rolling wasted scraps, etc. I just roll the dough into a very even square or rectangle and cut the dough with my big kitchen knife or a pizza cutter into even sized squares or rectangles and tell everyone they're "presents."
No one seems to mind.

Use a knife and cut out shapes (possibly using a couple of patterns cut from cardboard).
OR use a pizza cutter and cut wavy lines to make decorative shapes.
OR roll dough into snakes and make sticks, pretzel shapes, knots, rings, etc.
OR use a pastry bag or cookie press.

I don't know if this is helpful, but what I do is use a knife to cut out the shape that I want. Just make the details (eyes, mouth, other tiny details) large enough so that when the cookie bakes, they don't close up.

If you have different shaped cups, use the open end to cut out different shaped cookies. At the least, you will have Christmas wreath shapes!

by cutting them freehand, or using different sizes of glasses that you drink out of and turn them upside down and use that as your cookie cutter...also wire coat hangers would do shape them into a shape with pliers and then push it into the dough...

maybe u can make some home made ones w/ wire. or now that i think about it you can make a personal touch by using a knife and making different shapes each time. it will take a while but it will look more interesting. happy holidays!

I agree with buying them at Wal-Mart and while you're there you could get sprinkles or whatever to decorate your cookies. Also, you can use a knife to get creative or a glass for a circular cookie.
