I made an Italian Cream cake and need to apply nuts on the sides . What is the easiest method without getting the nuts everywhere on the cake plate?

Take a little handful of chopped nuts and set them against the side of the cake before the frosting hardens and whatever nuts fall on the plate you can remove with a pastry brush or a piece of paper towel

I've seen chefs just cup the crushed pecans in the palm of one hand and then pat their hand, and thus the pecans, onto the side of the cake. You will drop some around the cake, but it shouldn't be too messy.

i use a pair of new tweezers and place them on one by one, but i get tired of that so i started using crushed walnuts and those are very easy to put in the sides of the cake!!!
you can put wax paper along the bottom of the cake and remove it when the cake is finished!!
