Why does red mean stop, yellow mean yield, and green mean go on a stoplight? Who chose the colors?

Not sure who exactly chose the colors, but originally they were not lights. Alternating signs were used instead. Also, orginially there were just two signs:go and stop. Caution was introduced because of the increasing rate of accidents as vehicle speeds increased.

Yellow does NOT mean Yeild.

It means "prepare to stop." Or, if flashing, "caution."
