I'm looking for a job. I'm 16 years old, and would prefer not to work fast-food (although I will when it becomes the last resort). Any ideas?

First off, your location is key. Where I live there are about 3 types of places a minor can work: Fast food (easiest to find a job at), regular food (probably not able to use knives and stuff, but can still wait tables) and locally owned grocery stores. That being said, most retail places, including walmart, require you to be 18. If you are not 18, most places would rather hire someone who is because they don't have to work around school scheduals and extracirricular activities. Generally, teens have a lot going on and non-fast food establishments don't like to work around these scheduals, not to mention I am sure there are some insurance issues as well.

Nevertheless, don't be disheartened. I started working at a cooperate owned steakhouse as a cook at 17, and I also waited tables and hosted there. If your town serves alcohol, then you may not be able to wait tables, but I live in a "dry county" for the moment, so it was no problem.

My fiance' who is 17, works at a k-mart which is an exception. I have worked retail though, and the job is mundane and boring. It pays better than fast food though.

But basically, it depends on the area. Try to get locally owned buisnesses to hire you. They usually treat the employees more fairly, and you have a better chance of getting a job. The only downside, is that in this area with illegal immigration on the rise local employers are starting to hire illegal immigrants, hopefully this isn't the case for you...

Good luck on the job hunt!

Acne is not going to matter. You will probably have to work at a place that pays minimum wage just because you are a teenager. Any fast food restaurants, any grocery stores, local hardware stores, stores in the mall, or on main street. Just start applying at places you think YOU want to work at.

I say anywhere that they don't use knives or blades that a Minor will have to use to preform their job function. You could be a hostess at a Restaurant, if you are good at computers, possibly at Best Buys.

If you're the trustworthy sort, go to doctors offices and ask if they need someone to help sort files or records. I warn you, tho, it's mind-numbing work.
