Eggs are usually marked with a "sell by" date and are good for quite some time after it--some people go longer than others. As eggs age, they lose some of their moisture and will begin to float in water. This is one way of aging eggs--if they sink, they are fresh; if they float partway up in a glass, they are beginning to get old; if they float with the big end up, they are getting old; if they float on their side, don't even try them.
Some people hard-boil their eggs when they pass the date on the package and get a new dozen for use as fresh--one way to take care of the age issue.
BTW, you should buy eggs a week before you plan to make hard-boiled eggs because they need to age a week or so in order to peel easily--remember this and your deviled eggs will always look nicer than other people's!
Happy eating!

If they expired shake them. They should not sound like they are full of water. Or you could open it in a separate bowl and see if it is runny, or the yolk looks funny.
Whenever you are opening a lot of eggs into a batch. Always only open a couple at a time into a separate bowl at a time. Then pour them into the batch for meringue or something like that. That way if you should happen on a bad one it won't spoil the whole batch. Just the 2 in the separate bowl.

Smell is the only real way. Also, I would avoid any eggs that are cracked to be on the safe side.
The floating trick doesn't have anything to do with "badness". It only a rough indication of age.
Also, eggs generally last a month past its expiration date.

Ok, I assume the eggs are raw. If you crack the egg onto a flat surface and the white is cloudy, its bad. Most eggs and dairy are relatively safe 3 days past pull.

When an egg is fresh it is difficult to peel when hard boiled and the yolk is bright yellow and stands up above the albumen (white) when cracked.
