Wow, first of all Thank You for even considering service to our nation.

Second, you are 19 I can understand that you have respect for your Dad, but you are an adult now, Time to make your own decisions.

If it is the navy that you want then go navy. Explain to your Dad why you want to go and be prepared for his further disapproval, but in the end it is your decision.

Congrats on the upcoming marriage. And include your soon to be other half in on your decision.

You are an adult. You have a right to your own life. Did he give you a hard time about getting married? Besides, you won't be sent to Iraq in the Navy...you will be sent to the surrounding water! If it is something you really want and you think you will regret it if you don't do it then do it. Living your life for your father not yourself and your wife-to-be will be a bigger mistake than joining and having to listen to him for the rest of your life.

Ask him where all the naval battles are taking place in Iraq. It's basically a land-locked country. Service members in the navy who tend to fight on land are called marines.

The only branch of service that could keep you farther away from the action is the coast guard.

I think it's admirable you don't want to go against his wishes. That shows your respect. But you also have to do what's right for you. For most people (not me!), serving is a good experience and gives you invaluable skills for later in life.

Very few Navy men/women go to Iraq. I do know that RivRon squadrons go to patrol the Euphrates River (one just came back in October). Our ships are often off the coast (for what coast they have). Our SeaBees are often deployed there.
It seems DADDY knows SQUAT about the Navy.
Make sure what ever rating you choose it can be translated into a good paying civilian career. You get FREE schooling and almost 3 years of hands on training free and get paid, to boot, if you get out after your first hitch. So choose wisely.

From my experience. I would put off getting married until I got out. I didn't. Back then (64 to 69) we had much lower pay than now and it was harder to get by. But by all means enlist. You'll be much better off in the future for it. As far as going to war, I had 2 WestPac cruises (which meant the Gulf of Tonkin-Viet Nam) and our ship never fired a shot. Choose a rate that will convert to a good career as a civilian, electronics, law enforcement or such. Keep your nose clean and do as told and you'll make it just fine. There's a great big beautiful world out there, get out and see some of it. You will never forget it. And thank you for choosing to serve. Oh, and your dad will get over it.

Join the navy. You always have a soft rack and warm meals.
even if you're sent to iraq, there's not much of a naval battle going on. talk to the recruiter and see if there is a way to
stay stateside. they are desperate for people, so they might agree. just make sure you get it all in writing

You're an adult. If you're getting married - what does your fiance think? If you just think you're going to get married one day, then do what you want to do with your life. It's your life.

And the Navy is in Iraq, but not nearly in the numbers that the Army and Marines are. Besides, you'll have training to do before getting sent anywhere.

look depending on your job in the navy your risk of actually going to a dangerous area in iraq are very slim. its all about what you want to do. if you pick a combat related job then unfourtanetly you are obviously going to be put in a combat situation. but because the navy isnt always about combat its position for that kinda thing are specialized. therefore youl have better combat related training than the average marine or army guy. so see if you told me what you wanted to do in the navy then i can give you some more in depth advice
