For the person that said it's a tourist trap you are completely wrong. I actually know a "security guard" for area 51 and if any unauthorized vehicle get within a certain distance of area 51 the whole place goes on lockdown and humvees with 4-6 guys with machine guns surround the vehicle. And to the person who asked the question, most likely it is military secrets. They still do a lot of tests out there. Mostly with explosives.

Area 51 was a top secret Air Force testing grounds. In the past few years, its importance has been scaled back. I have read that allot of what went on in Area 51 has been moved to a base in Utah.

Area 51 was built near an area were nuclear testing was done in the 50s and 60s. Pieces of radioactive material are making their way back to the surface and causing health problems for those stationed there.

top secret U.S. military base and test facility. Rumored to be the site where aliens and ufos are kept and researched. officially simply it is a secret military aircraft reaserch base. although i personally believe that it is nothing more than a place to keep documents and files. sure it WAS a secret base where secret aircraft where tested. but given the publicity it has i doubt that the government would want to keep anything really important in there. it serves as a great distraction. it keeps everyone busy and stuff therefore not letting anyone else look for REAL secret bases and test facilites

Probably not much of anything these days. If there was anything secret there in the past, they would have moved it by now. I mean, would you keep anything important in a place that's now a tourist trap?
