Yes, it's not only polite, it's expected.
My great uncle, who is not only 97 years old, but also just 2 feet 7 inches tall, squeals with delight when I grab him by his beard and toss him in the air. Many times he has managed a double somersault before we've even finished saying hello.

No... I know they are cute, cuddly and all but "Little People" are just that; small versions of people. How would you feel if someone greeted you by picking you up, basically asserting the notion they find you tiny? Dealing with any person needs to be on the grounds of at least physical respect.
By the way, I've been privileged to see an physical altercation between a "Little Person" and a "normal sized" person, the "Little Person" actually picked the "normal sized" person up and slammed him on the concrete. I was young when I saw this, and it stuck with me all this time...
If it feels awkward to look down and shake hands, then bend down and shake hands, or just wave at everyone you are greeting.

I don't think they would appreciate that. Although being small may have some assets, like being able to sneak around unnoticed, midgets probably feel self concious about not being "normal". If you picked them up, it would be verifying that fact because it isn't "normal" to pick up an adult person to greet them. Remember, they are normal, intelligent people inside, and may have a way to get you back!
Anyways, as long as you're tall enough to reach the ground, who cares? lol

That would be the rudest, most insulting and worst example of etiquette ever. It would be patronizing, to say the least; you treat them the same way youw ould treat anyeone else, and accord them the same courtesies. If it is too awkward for you to bend down a little and shake hands, you might be better off (and them as well) by not greeting them at all...

Hmm. Look for a bench somewhere and tell him/her that your feet are tired and want to sit down to chat, and will they join you? Once you're both seated, it'll be more comfortable for both of you.
Or you could just try things your way, them come back here will a full report, letting us know how things went.

Don't greet them any differently than you would a person of normal height. I doubt they want to be treated like 6 year olds.

ummm, i dont think they would like that very much! i think you should just shake their hand like you would shake anyone else's hand. they are just the same as everyone else, with feelings and stuff, the only difference is that they are a little shorter.

I sincerely doubt they would appreciate that. It would be quite a bit like saying you are not good enough to meet regular social norms so I will adjust your physical presence to fit into my idea of normal.

Only if it is a drunken friend that isn't going to get pissed at you for doing so.
By all means ask them how they are doing though.
