Jehovah's Witnesses are relatively unique among self-described Christians in that they understand the Scriptures to teach that God's Kingdom by Christ Jesus is a real government which will soon replace all earthly governments.
(Daniel 2:44) God of heaven will set up a kingdom... It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite

That Kingdom will rule over the vast majority of mankind, most of whom will have been raised from the dead after Armageddon.
(John 11:23,24) Jesus said to her: “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.”
(Acts 24:15) There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Until that resurrection, there is no suffering in "hell", or the grave. Sometime after the resurrection, death and "hell" will themselves be destroyed.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all
(Ecclesiastes 9:10) there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol ["hell"]
(Revelation 20:14) And death and Hades ["hell"] were hurled into the lake of fire

While a limitted number of humans will be resurrected to heaven to share in ruling over mankind, the vast majority (literally more than 99.9%) of Jehovah's Witnesses expect an EARTHLY hope, the same hope given to Adam and Eve.
(Genesis 1:28) God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill THE EARTH and subdue it [caps added]
(Genesis 2:17) You must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die [so never eating from that tree means never dying]

Interestingly, the Scriptures are full of references to this earthly hope.
(Psalms 37:11) 'the meek will possess the earth'
(Proverbs 2:21) 'upright will reside in the earth'
(Isaiah 45:18) 'God formed the earth to be inhabited'
(Matthew 5:5) 'the mild will inherit the earth'
(Revelation 21:3) The tent of God is with mankind

There is a HUGE difference between the two. Basically, if you leave the Lutheran church and become a Jehovah's Witness you will have given up the surety of forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life.
You will not find the Sacrament of Holy Communion, with the true presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
They deny the existance of the trinity.
They feel that only a few select are chosen and will have eternal life.
They deny that Christ is the Son of God, and as such are not Christians.
They use a bible that is purposefully mistranslated in many places. (This is pretty much agreed on by mainstream Christianity!)

The list goes on. Please check out the website which address the Lutheran stand on Jehovah's Witnesses.

I was born a Lutheran as well and as you obviously didn't know anything about God at all. Apart from a few interesting stories. But after starting to look deeper into the bible I found a lot of doctrine that is unbiblical. I found JW to be the only ones that actually live what they preach. for example they don't kill there fellow human no matter which ruler tells them to .Another big difference is LW make a choice to serve God .Lutherans just get born into it. If you can find any denomination that studies the bible at least 5 times a week and try to live up to it you know you are on the right track

The Jehovah"s Witness are Christens that believe literally that when Jesus said to go out into the world and preach the Gospel that was what they were suppose to do.
The Lutherans believe that just a few of there leaders should do that.
The Jehovah's Witnesses are not a cult they worship God, not an idle or a man as cults tend to do.

...Martin Luther (the founder of the Lutheran Church)was a God inspired, Christian man. The JW's are at the end of the leash of their "handlers" in Brooklyn NY and have "skewed" the Words of God over the years to "spin-up" their "religious" nonsense... Luther translated God Word for the common people to read and have (much to the chagrin of the Roman Church)... The JW "Cult" in Brooklyn NY has translated and re-translated their New World Testament several times in order to try to correct their spiritual Blasphemes... The have diluted the Deity of Christ to "a-god"... God forbid.

Jehovah Witnesses:

...don't believe in the Trinity

...don't celebrate ANY holidays

...don't encourage higher education for youngsters because preaching is more important according to them

...don't serve in the Armed Forces

...don't believe in anything patriotic

...those tried by them and found guilty of any offense against their ways, are shunned from their own relatives.

...only use and believe in their very own edited Bible.

...are forced by the Watchtower Society to preach.

JW believe that Jesus is not God
That is the first major difference.

JW believe that the "second coming" already happened, this in order to cover up a prophecy that didn't come true. Prophecy that does not come true is a bad sign for a cult.....

Also, no offense to my JW family members....JW keeps families away from JW members. They cannot celebrate birthdays or holidays. That is when families normally gather together. Guess they don't want the JWs to interact with their families.....that is the worst....
