I want to join the Marines after high School and I want to get as much training as I can before hand, I'm a Freshman. What can I do now to prepare. I do weightlifting, Running, and Wrestling so I'm in good shape but not ripped or anything. My dad,
grandfather, and great grandfather were in the military. I want to continue the tradition.

First things first. Since less than 15% of adult males in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 26 can even meet the physical requirements for entry into the armed forces, you might want to look through the 200+ conditions and diseases which can disqualify you from serving in the first place. The link below is for the manual used to do those physicals. Concentrate on Chapter 2. That's the ones concerned with initial enlistment.

You can prepare by just enjoying being a teen. No amount of physical training will prepare you for Boot Camp. The Marine Corps. will tear you down physically and rebuild you in a way suitable for Marines. When I enlisted in 1985, there were many athletes, (Quarterbacks, track stars, Basketball Players) and none of them could complete the initial Physical fitness test. It is that hard. It is supposed to be, otherwise it would be the Army. Remember, you are not the only one going through it, thousands of young men and women have had to do the same things the same way and they made it. So can you.

The Marine Corps. is a wonderful choice, but keep in mind, it is the Military. Your primary function, regardless of your MOS (Job), is to be a Fighting Marine. This means you must accept the FACT that you could die for your country's leaders. There is nothing wrong with that, but no matter what any recruiter tells you, that is a fact.

I'm not trying to talk you out of The Marines, it is a wonderful life with many adventures.

Do yourself a huge favor though, DO NOT get engaged or married before or during your first 4-yr. enlistment.

Save your money and live on base and eat at the base cafeteria for at least 90% of your meals.

Don't buy a car unless you absolutely have to have one. You most likely won't need one. All bases have transportation on and off base.

Don't Drink excessively or smoke.

Do as much as the Corps. will let you. (Travel, Education, vacation)

When your 4yrs. are up, you should have enough money to buy a nice house and/or car and get a good job as a civilian. Then you can get married and have a wonderful life.

The Marine Corps. is an excellent choice.

Good luck, Semper Fi.
