I think it is really getting ridiculous. It is OK to give gifts but now people feel obligated to give half the block presents. Have spoiled kids who want thousands of dollars in gifts that they will not want to touch in six months, and are going in deep debt in the process. I think the focus of the holiday should be on the well being of the family not on things. Religion is a part of setting a firm foundation.

The three wise men brought gifts to baby Jesus when he was in the manger. There has to be a balance I buy gifts because I enjoy giving them to my family, and friends. But if the main reason to celebrate christmas is the gifts then it is so dissapointing. You know the day after christmas blues.
What my hubby and I did last year is, we prayed about what to get our girls, we limited to a very few gifts a piece. We focused on our family and being together and remembering why we were celebrating this day. And through prayer and talking with our kids, it was the best christmas we had ever had. And for the first time that I could remember there were no after christmas blues.

Misguided. In more ways then one. First of Jesus would definitely not want anyone to get into debt to buy expensive gifts.Second what has this fat dude with the beard got to do with God and didn't you know that the early Christians never celebrated Christmas. It was actually adapted from the pagan sungodfestival to make Christianity more acceptable to pagans.

Christmas and most of the things that are associated with it (Christmas trees, Yule logs, wreaths, lights, gift giving, etc.) were actually Pagan holidays celebrated long, long before Jesus was a twinkle in his mother's eye...

Jesus was not even born in December. Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate holidays. Perhaps most other Christian sects should take a lesson from them.

americans can be greedy because we have so much wants and technology. Try and set up an organization to donate to the people of Africa. When people see you happy, they might want to join in. Also, reading the Bible to some people wouldn't hurt. Spread the good word!
It's great that you are thinking about the true meaning of Christmas. Your church family will also help you remember the season. So get involved!

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!

It's true that Christmas has become commercialized.
On the other hand, you could say that capitalism has been spiritualized.
Even the secularized Christmas glorifies generosity, joy, peace, family, and good fellowship.
There are a lot of worse things people could be doing than giving presents.

A lot of people do that and I will admit even I can be guilty of it at times. This year I made a decision. I am still going to buy presents but in addition to what I would normally buy I am going to buy a Christian item for everyone on my list. Whether it be a CD, book, or something else.

I think they get caught up in American capitalism. I think it would do a lot of people a lot of good if we quit going into debt to buy Christmas presents. However, talking about "Christmas" infringes people's rights, apparently, so I'm afaid it's only going to get worse.

Christmas is about giving and receiving. The more you give and receive the better your Christmas is.
It's also about putting glow-in-the-dark baby Jesus scenes on your front lawn and getting drunk more often because we get to be on vacation more.
