Winter is coming soon and IF i get a dog, i`d have no idea how to walk it or atleast get it some exercise when theres a big snow or if theres ice on the sidewalk or streets & if its like 20* outside. We have a smallish house & the dog i might get would be a Border Collie.
I read that they need much exercise or have something to do.
The dog might most likely be a Puppy, not a full-grown Dog.
HELP!

We just had a snowstorm last night. It didn't stop (actually, I think it encouraged) the two dogs I live with from running and playing outside. Cold, hot, whatever - weather is no excuse not to exercise a dog. Border Collies were bred to work outside all day - they're incredibly intelligent, need a job to do (if you get one, plan on doing agility, herding, obedience - SOMETHING besides just letting it be a pet), and are active.
Well, if there's ice on the sidewalk, you walk it the same way you would if there wasn't, except you are more bundled up.

Border Collies NEED exercise!!! Full grown or not. Border Collies need several walks a day or something done with them. There is no way you can have a BC and not be willing to walk in the cold, rain or snow. We walk unless it is truley dangerous to do so and we have 4 Border Collies and 3 Jack Russells. If we can't go out, we teach tricks and each dog has to be worked for 15 to 20 minutes at the very least.
Border Collies need a lot of time and need both mental and physical exercise. If left alone or don't get enough exercise, they can start getting really bad habbits. They'll spin in place, herd cars or people, chase shadows, chew, bark or get into anything that they can. Border Collies need room to full out run! We do live in town, but we have a large, fenced back yard and live 2 blocks from a school that allows dogs. We also train agility 2 to 3 times a week. We go play ball at the school. We teach tricks in the house. Each family member takes their own dogs and has to work them.
This breed is not for first time dog owners. They are a lot of work and need a lot of attention. I wouldn't get a puppy because there are no garantees with a pup. If you feel you can not give enough exercise in the winter, then go to rescue and find a year old rescue with low to medium drive and you won't need to exercise as much, but will still need to. Border Collie puppies are REALLY hard!!!! They go through fear periods, can go through some strange periods where no matter what you do, they can be scared, and aggressive. They need attention or else they will get into everything and anything they can. We had a pup who was really hard to wear out to go to sleep and he'd be up half the night wanting to play. So we took food and water away from him a couple hours before bed and did not let him nap and took him for a walk.
Please do your research and really determine if you have the time, patience and recources for a Border Collie. So many people put these dogs in rescue or the pound because they just don't realize how much work a Border Collie is.

NO! If you aren't sure how you are going to walk your dog when it is cold, DO NOT get a border collie.
Border collies are EXTREMELY active dogs. Your dog is going to want to be outside all day long. Walks are NOT enough for this breed.
A smallish house is even worse for the breed. You and the dog will be miserable.
Consider a more laid-back breed.
If you want suggestions, I will give them to you.

Most dogs have to be exercised no matter if there is snow outside or not. The only thing you could do is bundle up and take him for a walk anyway - in the snow. If you want a "lap" dog that doesn't need walking get a King Charles Spaniel, they were bred to sit in the kings lap all day.

Well, if you get a BC, you will HAVE to get out and walk it several times daily...cold or not. It is FREEZING today where I am and that doesn't stop me from spending about three house total outside in the cold with the dogs.
We also have an American Bulldog who has a very short coat, but she was fine...she needs the exercise too.

it depends on where you live if you live in the city and don't have a place to let them off the leash outside then your're going to have to walk them outside, but if you have a backyard enough to play catch then you can do that you can also play with your dog inside with toys. if it's a puppy make sure you have toys for teathing.

If you already know you don't have the time or energy to give to a puppy, why are you even considering it? This is why shelters are overrun.
