I was chatting with my Jewish friend.
she said for Hanakuah, they are killing a cow to eat or something.
Without painkillers, meaning the animal would feel the pain.
I asked why cound't give it some painkillers.
It's kosher law to slit the throat of the animal and let the blood drain out while the animal is still alive.
Sad D:

So is this true?
any jewish people, do you guys do the same?

First of all, either you or your friend must be mistaken. We don't kill animals for Hanukkah. Unless she lives somewhere archaic. Anyways.

According to Jewish law, the slaughter of any animal has to be as painless as possible. The throat is cut, but with a knife so impeccably sharp that it only ever takes one cut and the animal dies almost instantaneously. We do not stun the animal beforehand (which includes hitting it on the head with a mallet) or anything else. The animal is kept in extreme comfort until after it is dead. When it is dead it is hung up to let the blood drain out of it. You will find your local non-kosher butcher has much more inhumane practices than that of Jewish law.

I'm not sure about Jews but drugging an animals is wrong because then the animal will have the drugs in it's body when you eat it. So then the drugs from the animal would go into the human. The Islamic way to slaughter the animal is to slit the throat with a sharp knife to minimize the suffering and pain of the animal by slitting the animal's throat you drain the blood of the animal; eliminating the chance of diseases and parasites transferring to the humans. The Islamic way drains out 80% of the blood from the animal.

Actually, kosher slaughter is painless. The knife used is exceptionally sharp and can have no nicks in it. It is cut across the carotid, jugular and oesophagus in a single cut, unconsciousness is instantaneous and the animal feels no pain. Unkosher slaughter first delivers a shock to stun the animal, and then a bolt is shot into the head.

And the slaughter can only be done by a specially trained person called a shochet- very few people are trained to be shochets. On top of that, what makes your stury VERY unlikely and most probably just troll bait, is the fact that the traditional food for Channukah is fried items such as donuts and potato latkes. Nobody slaughters cows at home and we buy our meat from butcheries (unless you live on a farm and have no othe roption for kosher food- but then you would be a trained shochet.)

Your friend is teasing you! I can assure you that for Chanukah we do not kill cows nor any other living thing!!!

Kosher meat means:

- that the animal has been killed with the MINIMUM of pain

- that the animal did not die of disease

If an animal has its' throat cut, then it is no longer alive, so your premise is wrong...

Jews and Muslims both put emphasis on being careful over how meat is killed. Jews have kosher meat, Muslims have halal. Kosher is slightly stricter, so many Muslims can and do eat kosher meat!

Do you think people actually give the animals you eat painkillers before they kill them? Slitting their throat is the HUMANE way to slaughter them. It is the quickest way and the one that causes the least amount of harm to the animal. By the way, they start to let the blood drain out but the animal dies quickly much of the blood leaves after it is dead.

Do some more research into how animals are generally killed in the US, you'd be surprised. Do you want to eat meat that has pain killers in it? People, even non-religious ones have been slaughtering animals by slitting their throats for eternity now. They raised them, loved them, cared for them and ATE them.

Actually cutting the throat is the most humane way to kill an animal. Would you rather do it the American style by hitting it in the head, stabbing it repeatedly through the neck, using a hammer gun to the head? They sure don't die quickly that way!

I read a short book called The Dietary Laws and their Meanings for Our Times a few years back. Written by a Rabbi, and it explained everything out quite well.
I cannot recall all details, and no longer have the book, but God had much concern for the lives of animals, and the methods employed were as humane as possible. God detailed the method, it seems, and it was not at all as brutal as it sounds.

When cows are slaughtered in this country, a heavy-impact hammer smashes into their head and brain, instantly rendering them unconscious or dead. Use of painkillers would result in you consuming the same. Kosher slaughtering involves hanging the animal upside down so blood drains from the animals neck.

Kosher ritual pays extraordinary attention to hygiene and animal welfare.

The kosher form of animal slaughter IS the most humane way of killing them. If you haven't been to a non-kosher slaughterhouse, I suggest you check it out. You may end up buying only kosher meat or going vegetarian.
