I bought a little digital scale on e-bay for about $20 that measures 1 gram nicely. But some decades ago I made a balance that would do the job.

All you need to do is build a beam balance. I could only find one example on the Internet that is linked to below.

The one I made used a coat hanger also but was a lot simpler. Some key things:

-The weighing cups need to be an equal distance from the pivot point
-You have to use the balance in an area fee from drafts
-Lack of friction at the pivot point is critical.

A US nickel weighs almost exactly 5 grams. You will probably get better accuracy if you weigh out 5 grams of grain and divide it 5 ways. If you live where there are no US nickels, do a google search for the weight of some local coins.

You can also use the nickel to weigh some small uniform objects like BBs and use them to directly measure 1 gram directly.
