Ok, I guess there is always a chance it will kill you, but for best odds, how close can you get?

100 yards?

Are you telling me I could stand in the goal of an English football pitch, and a guy at the other end (in the other goal) could kill me with a shotgun?

We in the UK are not gun savvy, but that sounds rediculouse.

Having been like monty, shot at 40 yards, it is not lethal, stings yep, but that's about it.
As others have said, it all depends on the size of shot being used, I was shot with the most commonly used shot size in the UK, no.6.
I must say that some of the answers here are from people who have never used a shotgun, or if they have, they have a very vivid imagination !
To answer your question, with bird-shot, I would guess at 8 yards max to be effective, after all, most of the pellets that kill birds remain in it after penetrating two inches, and this at sporting distances, 20-30 yards. Again, this would depend on where you are hit, I have known a guy accidentally shot in the lower thigh with a 12g at two yards, it was not fatal and he did not lose his leg.

That would actually depend on what size shot and what gauge shotgun that was being fired. A slug would kill you because it is one big piece of lead. 00 is next, very large shot pellets . the larger the number the smaller the pellets so on so forth. Next is the gauge, 10 ga. most powerful 12 next again the larger the number the less powerful the blast. One more factor to consider, the choke on the barrel. The choke is the spread pattern of the shot. I would say 100 yards would put a good wallup on your @ss if the shot is small. If 00 or slug, kiss you @ss goodbye at that distance.

There are numerous tips off shotguns and ammunition for each. A 12 gauge 3" slug is effective at over 100 yards.

I was shot at 40 yds and managed to turn my backall I got was a shower of shot on my wax proof coat the only damage it did was to melt the wax were the individual balls of shot hit the shot size was 7.5sbut I would imagine that a shot size of 4 or grater would have done more. the best thibg to do is stay the right end of the gun. good luck.

This is one of those questions with no real answer. It depends on what type of ammunition (shotshells) are used, distance, type of shotgun and barrel length, a bunch of diferent factors are involved. You could be struck with a shotgun rifled slug at 120 yards and it be fatal. You could have someone shoot at you with #00 Buckshot (Contains 9-32 caliber lead pellets per shell) and any one of these pellets could be fatal at up to 120 yards away. A guess would be 150 yards or more and that's just what it is...a guess..Anything is possible..

It would hurt like hell and you wouldn't be doing much for a while at 50 yards, but I don't think you would die although you might need a friend to carry you off. At 100 yards you are probably pretty safe, any pellets would probably just sting really bad.

No matter what, you aren't going to like getting hit by it. It also depends what type of shot you are using, my estimates are for bird shot. Slugs are lethal at much longer ranges.

There is the issue of fatal, then the issue of hitting the target. Shotguns spread, if you shot at someone at 50 yards, they might not get hit by the shot.

If they are shooting at you with shotgun pellets or BB's approximately 30 yards.* If they are shooting Buck Shot approximately 75 yards.* If they are shooting Rifled Slugs you can kiss your a-- goodbye at any distance beyond 100 yards to 350 yards.*

This thoery depends on many factors

-The weapon used (double barrel or single barrel)
-The caliber used
-The wind speed
-The parts of the body which the pellets penetrates

10-50 FT=Extremly high chance of death and serious injuries to internal organs

50-100FT=Lower risk of death, still life threating is pellet penetrates the upper body.

The kill maximum kill range for a standard shotgun cartridge is approx 90 yards. Also the size (or diameter ) of the muzzle which can be full choke and half choke. The choke affects the spread of the shot, ie the full choke will give you the greater distance. A note for citizen sawing the barrel of a shot will spread the shot considerably but will shorten the range to about 20 yards.
