I can't tell what you are referring to, your question is pretty general, but I will share a story with you and perhaps some of the info will also help you.
A young girl was happy and growing healthy as it all seemed until her world completely changed overnight with the break-up of her parents, she began to feel like a ship with no where to dock. Her stable environment was gone never to be the same anymore. With each passing year she became more troubled trying to fill the void she felt in her heart. She tried music, the alternative rock kind, she began to cut herself, she drank trying to sooth her pain, she went for counseling, she began to be in the dark side meditating on death and destruction of herself. She tried to commit suicide several times without success. Then one day her Grandparents took her in and began to nurture her and give her the love, and stable environment, rules and consequences that made her have to do the things that were right and good for her. No more music of death and destruction,no more movies(the Horror type) all seemingly harmful influences were taken away. Now she is a fine, thoughtful young lady, she has god in her life, she is loved she knows that she belongs and she knows where. It was a long and painful road at times but she is well now. The mind is a powerful thing and we are what we think so somehow you have to change there way of thinking to make them more stable. GOOD LUCK.

Prayer to our heavenly Father, certainly.
A little insight into the ways of God is essential.
Though people seem to shy away from reading the Bible it really is a wonderful book. If you persist in reading it with an open mind you will be well rewarded.
I hope this helps.

Both John the Baptist and Jesus used the term:
Repent.
Some describe the word repent as meaning change your thoughts.
Let the weak say, I am strong. (Bible)
Let the troubled say, I am peace and stability.
I am peaceful and stable.
Christian Sid Roth said his whole life turned around, overnight, using a prayer of two words: Jesus help.

Realizing that there are no gods is a good start. Then you'll be more likely to value life more, and you'll see life in a more realistic perspective. Reality tends to ground people better than fantasy.
