Because its relatively safe to say Canada has a better reputation throughout the world than the Americans do. However we are becoming more and more like Americans everyday.

I personally do not pretend to be Canadian when I'm traveling. But I think that people who do it are trying to take advantage of the better reputation that Canadian culture has with the peoples of the world than American culture. Many people resent America, and, by association, Americans, but don't have a problem with Canadians. So, in some places, Canadians will get better treatment.

(P.S. I used to live in Canada and I don't "down" it. Canada is a wonderful country and I really enjoyed living there.)

I've heard of people doing that before, honestly I have. Even though I travel a bit myself I've never been to Canada, I would never say anything bad about them. My ex was French Canadian and Irish.

I never thought people would have such disregard for there country to deny their heritage or place of origin, I wouldn't.

It's tough times though and some people would rather lie and say Canadian when in Europe then to hear 10-yards of S&it about Our Pres. and what's wrong w/America. Sometimes it's the 1st thing that comes to someone's mind/mouth after we state where we are from.

Perhaps, some are just tired of hearing how bad we are, and cowher, Others stand-up and say "I love my country no matter what others say, I'm Glad; wait Proud to be an American."

I'm Proud of Our Military, & Those Who Have & Continue to Serve Our Country As Well.

I've never heard of Americans saying they're Canadian when they travel. If they do, maybe it's because not everyone likes Americans, but I don't understand what you mean by "downing" Canadians.

I've heard of that before. I'm told that in certain areas of the world - you are less likely to be kidnapped and held for ransom - or targeted by thieves - if you present yourself as Canadian rather than American.

The ones that say it probably say it because of how ignorant some people in other countries are.

It's funny how they lump all of us together, and make accusations against ALL Americans that most likely are only true about a few. The most ignorant of all is how "rich" they think we all are - I really wish I knew where all the money they think I have is. They accuse all of us of "blindly believing our leaders and media" when they do the same exact thing. If they did not, they would not have the ignorant perceptions that they have.

i've met americans in 4 other countries, i've never met anyone who claimed to be canadian outside of canada. and i don't think most people really think badly of canadians, they just tease them about their accent. (which i don't consider offensive, i get it all the time because of my NY accent) personally i think canada is beautiful, and everyone i met up there was very nice.

No matter, where in the world, I have travelled. I NEVER say I am anything but, an American.... why on earth, would I want to pretend to be, something I am not?

Why would they say they're Canadians when most Americans can't point Canada out on a map. Must be a myth. haha
