You can't unless you have a sponsor (employement/marriage). However, certain visas do not allow you to adjust your status.

Also, entering the US on a visitor visa with the intent to immigrate is illegal.

Lawful Permanent Residence ("Green Card")

A "green card" gives you official immigration status (Lawful Permanent Residency) in the United states. Basically, there are two avenues to reach lawful permanent resident status:

Immigration through a Family Member
Immigration through Employment

Both of these methods call for a petition to be submitted to the Immigration authorities by the family member or the prospective employer.

If the petition is approved, one step of many steps has been completed. It's a long process that involves a lot of paperwork. The waiting period would depend upon the type of petition.

A visit visa should first be converted to a working visa or visa of a dependent with someone who is working in the US or marry a citizen in order to get a greencard.

One way is to marry an american citizen (of course tell them you are using them). You can pay them to be your partner until you get your greencard. It takes about 2-3 years or so. All though, I think its wrong. =/
