If it was God the father then why was it guiding the wise men to jesus when they were under King herods orders to report back to him (so as to have baby Jesus killed)

Why would God who can read the hearts of men put a star in the sky if he knew he would have to intervene and tell the wise men not to go back to herod

We do know that this “star” was not from God. With sinister precision, it leads these pagan worshipers right to Jesus—a child vulnerable and helpless, protected only by a poor carpenter and his wife. The astrologers, Herod’s unwitting dupes, likely would have reported back to the vengeful monarch, leading to the child’s destruction. But God intervenes through a dream and sends them back home by another route. The “star,” then, must have been a device of God’s enemy Satan, who would go to any lengths to harm the Messiah. How ironic that the “star” and astrologers are portrayed in Nativity scenes as emissaries of God!—Matthew 2:9-12.

Yes, it was placed their by God the Father. If you keep reading the story, you find that God the Father also sent an angel to tell the Wise Men not to go back to Herod. So they returned to their country by another route. This illustrates the point that we are to obey civil rulers only to the point where their edicts contramand God's orders. It also illustrates that God is the Supreme Authority.
EDIT:
>> Why would God who can read the hearts of men put a star

>> wise men not to go back to herod
Many scholars feel that God had to lead these Wise Men from as much as two years away from Bethlehem. The best way to lead them was to use a star (of course, that star was actually a cluster of angels or even a single very bright angel -- e.g., Gabriel). God knew He would have no real trouble from Herod. The important thing was to guide these men whom had been studying and watching and waiting for the coming of the Messiah -- though they were not Jews and were from a very distant country.

For the wise men, it was an appropiate sign in the heavens of the Messiah. As for Herod, he would be able to find out anyway from Biblical prophecy that the Messiah was going to be born in David's city. I suppose God wasn't guiding every move of the wise men, so they made the foolish mistake of going to the king (although perhaps it would have been hard to avoid if they were obvious foreigners in the semi-independent state that Herod the Great ruled.)
It is certainly strange that the world is an interplay of good and evil in the sense that God can only seemingly help those with faith. So the wise men could receive visions telling them not to go back to Herod. And Joseph was told to leave for Egypt to escape Herod. But He didn't stop the freewill of Herod, who presumably was stirred up by Satan into pyschopathic jealousy, which led him to try to kill Jesus by murdering all infants in the Bethlehem area.
----
I think the idea that Satan did it is attributing too much power to a fallen angel - a created being, albeit a spirit and one high up in the ranks. Although in passages such as Mark 4 it would appear that Satan might be sometimes able to affect the physical world. Satan was mostly active in Jesus ministry time in getting the pharisees worked up by making suggestions to their minds so they got bothered on silly literalistic Law technicalities to be highly angry with Jesus (just like those Sudanese 'religious' people.), so that they were driven to murder Him.

It replaced into probable a comet. besides, the story of the Magi (clever men/Kings), would not make experience. They introduced gold, frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense and myrrh come from the south of what's now the Arabian peninsula. So how is it that they stated, 'we've seen a action picture star interior the east'?. They have been coming from the south and doubtless the east, so the action picture star could have been interior the north or west. No evaluate taking those form of sayings actually, it only provides to the confusion. You the two have faith; pretend to have faith: %. and choose the bits of Jesus' words which extra healthful your ideal wing attitudes (cf. u . s . a . Bible Belt) or you do not have faith. it is your selection. Matthew replaced into recording rumour. He did not witness the action picture star individually.

it was God, because God has control over the whole Earth. yes, He knew that the wise men were working for king Horod but God knew the ending before it even came to be. He knew that the wise men wouldn't hand Jesus over to king Herod

The 'star' shining in the east represents the Burning Heart. It is our inner conviction that we can achieve whatever it is that we set our hearts on.
Meta-Physically, the 'East' is within and the West is the outer world around us.
The Three wise men following the Star where Jesus is to be born represent the accumulated wisdom and experience that we have built up over time.
The gifts they bring are as follows:
Gold - consciousness of the omnipresence of Spiritual substance.
Frankinsense - The transmutation of material thoughts into Spiritual consciousness.
Myrrh - Grace, the 'ointment of Love' that we are able to pour out when Love is awakened in our hearts and we speak with Wisdom expressed through Love.
The whole Bible is a text book that when understood correctly will provide the whole race with the necessary understanding to overcome the 'satanic consciousness' - the selfish ego.
Do not try to relate the bible stories to history, you will get lost as their meaning runs much deeper than that.
