Ok, so I was fired from my last job because customers complained that I was rude. I was never out-right rude to someone I'm just a quiet person and I think alot of people take that as I'm being rude to them. So now I need to find a new job how would I tell my potential boss about this without sounding like I'm really bad at customer service. Also, when I asked my last boss what should I say when I get asked for the reason I was terminated he said that he doesn't know, just whatever I can think of. They said they will give me a good reference I just dont know how to put this without sounding like someone they shouldn't hire.

I never thought of that. I also didnt know that by law they cant ask why I was let go. But alot of these applications I fill out ask if I was ever terminated.

If your last employer is going to give you a good reference, then gloss the whole thing over. Don't tell them why you got fired, by law they can't ask your old employer why anyway. All they can ask is "Did so-and-so work there?" and "Would you hire them again?" and your old employer will say "Yes." to both because they don't want a lawsuit.

If asked why you left tell them you were looking for better opportunities. I'm not sure I would tell them I was terminated, especially since they said they'd give you a good reference. Of course you don't want to lie on the application either. You could say you were "laid off" which makes it sound like they let you go because they didn't need you, not because you did something wrong. And it's really lame your old boss couldn't even say exactly why you were terminated.

The other option is to not list them as an employer. I've known lots of people that have done that.

Whoever said the potential employer can't ask why you were fired is wrong. They can legally ask, and the former employer can legally tell them although many won't.

You could just say that the previous job wasn't a good fit or something like that if they ask.

it was up to last employer to retrain you for what is proper way to handle customers in future. just say it was mutual between employer and you, employers arent really allowed to bad mouth people who leave, good luck, take a chance that it will never come up.
