It's completely safe, if:
1). It's SATA
2). It's 2,5" HDD
3). It's 5400 RPM (You can use slighlly faster 7200 RPM too, but Sony recommends 5400 RPM).
That's it.

It is safe, it will not break the PS3, or even void the warranty. The only drawback is that you really don't need that much HDD space, and it will end up costing as much as the PS3 itself to even get one. You might be able to get a cheaper one on ebay, but still I think it would be over 200 bucks at least.

Yes it is safe just make sure you back up your ps3 first to a external jump harddrive or jumpdrive etc... so you don't loose your game saves and music and stuff you may have downloaded from the internet. THe playstation manual has step by step how to do it and what to buy. 250 is the max. the ps3 will recognise interanlly right now.

Another option is getting an external Hard Drive at BestBuy or Futureshop etc.

But the cheapest solution is buy a 40gb and get a 500gb HDD for like $110 and BAM you just got 500GB PS3 for cheap.

You can put any standard 2.5" sata hard drive into your ps3 console. Sony delibratly designed it this way to do so unlike the 360 which you need a special hard drive
