I want to send out out a thank you card, but am not sure if I should write Mr and Mrs X or vice versa.

The correct form is:

Mr. and Mrs. X

Unless the wife has kept her family name, then it's
Mr. X and Ms.Y

When It's a married couple the Husband always comes first. Mr. and Mrs. Brown.

When writing cards or letters, the man always comes firsts so it should be Mr. and Mrs X.

Proper etiquette calls for Mr. & Mrs. Man always comes first when addressing both, even if you know the woman and not the man.
