It's not really something you can choose to be.
You can choose to study religion and science and figure out more about the world and human nature. However, you can't really choose to be convinced or unconvinced by anything.
Stastically, however, the more you learn, the more likely it is that you'll become an atheist.

Lol! Well, let's see....
you can start by studying the bible, the koran, the bhagavida (spelling on that, I know...I missed something) and then some world history and some science.
Then you can live this life as if it is your only one (because it is) and realize that goodness and kindness is innate and does nothing except make your life and the lives of those around you a happier one. It's a win-win! Stop worrying if you are upsetting a deity and worry about whether or not your actions are worthy of your only life you have.

Do a little research on the origins of the books of the new testament, and if that doesn`t help try a flight to Kashmir to look at the tomb of Issa. The man who survived cruxificsion, and lived to 84.
Study of the bible should bring you to the conclusion that Jesus never died on the cross. If he had they would not have taken 100lbs of aloe, a healing herd, into his temporary tomb.
Other questions to look at would be Pauls escort out of Judhia, by the romans. The jewish (christian) cult tried to kill him, Why..?
That should give you a few things to unraval in your quest for truth..!!

Enjoy your new found freedom from the tyrannical binds of religious dogma.
Oh my god, someone used the term nihilism. I know I'm not atheist and after reading the Wikipedia summary of Nihilism, I think I may be a nihilist. Then again, skeptic may also apply. Labels are so limiting!

there is no process, for most it just happens when they realize what they have been taught to believe makes no sense
I would recommend you staying on your current path. You will either become reconciled with your faith or embark on a journey for new answers. either way you will grow in the experience.

You sound sort of lost in your beliefs.
You don't have to go to church or read the bible to believe in God. From my experience, it helps but not necessary.
I would suggest turning to the Bible to find passages about feeling lost, not having faith, etc (look in subject index). See what it says. Don't turn from God when you feel lost, turn TO him.

From what you describe of your "Christian" life, you're already there. If you were truly born-again, you'd never want to live a life in hatred towards God and others. You'd know the pure joy of having a relationship with Jesus and being able to love others as He loved us. Atheists don't know how to do that.... what a miserable life!

If you want to become an atheist, then ask someone who knows how it feels and ask them about it.

It ain't bliss kid. Conversion to atheism is usually surrounded by years of depression because of the realization that everyone in your life lied to you and that the bad guys really aren't punished.
