where did the phrase God bless you come from

when you sneeze it's you're soul trying to get out of you're body. But God stops it from comming out that's why they say God bless you

Because people use to think that when you sneezed it was your soul leaving your body, so they would say GOD Bless you so that your soul wouldn't leave. But now it's just a way to be polite and for me it's an excuse to say "GOD Bless you!" so, GOD bless you!!!! =o)

Some people thought that you were getting rid of evil spirits. I suppose that they thought that God's blessing would help this happen.

it is said that when you sneeze your heart stops for a quick period of time... bless you is the response to sneezing because your lucky to be alive.

sneezing is a symptom of bubonic plague

Traditionally people said bless you because they were afraid you might die, of plague.
