Sam is a lovable dog, but we feel he may be in a depressed state. My sister just married and moved out and my mom and I are in and out the house alot. He is here alone maybe 8 hours per day while we work. We do play with him daily and he goes for walks each day. I'm just concerned one day he'll eat the wrong thing from the trash and taking the trash out every day before we leave can be a costly solution.

Carin's have a bad issue with seperation anxeity. Try leaving on a radio during the day or the tv. My parents dog won't eat or drink while my mom is gone..she sleeps under the chair until she hears my mom's car.

Try putting the trash can up on the counter, when you come home and the dog hasn't moved it...reward her..do this over and over...she will get it and then you should be able to bring the trash can down on the floor.

well i also have a dog named sam/sammy to but anyways what i would do is either hide the trash cans or make a spot in a closed area or get the dog some baby gates to block the garbage bins.

There are sound deterents that are attached to motion sensors.

They're about $30 at Petsmart.

Hold on, I'll get you links.

He does need more exersize.
Pet sitting companies can come in and walk him while your gone or take up jogging.
Teach him to run next to a bicycle.
Long runs everyday will keep him happy.

I put my bin in a cupboard but the dogs are big and know how to open the cupboard. Dogs are scavengers. Modern kitchens have built in bins. Hide the bin, I guess. Empty it regularly.

Move the garbage can to a room he isn't allowed in. If he doesn't have access to the garbage can he can't get into it.
