Dear SYA....Until a couple of years ago I wouldn't touch an avocado or anything made with one....However, when I read how good they are for you I thought, lets go at this thing again....So I went on the internet and looked up a few recipes, bought a couple of avocado's and went to work....To open one, cut all around the egg shape, down to the seed, (do not harm the seed)pry the two parts away from the seed, set the seed aside,,take a spoon and scoop out the flesh....put both of them into a mini food chopper and add 1 tbl. of lemon juice right away and process.....Add 1/2 green pepper, 2 cloves of garlic, 4 tbls. of fresh onions and process.until ingredients are chopped into small pieces...scoop everything into a bowi and I added chopped crisp bacon to mine, about 4 or 5 slices....You can add anything your fond of...then add about 1cup chunky salsa to it and mix......Use tostido chips or crackers to dip .....Now for the seed......Go on the internet and bring up instructions for growing avocado seeds...I have 4 trees growing, they are already about 4 ft. tall. I put them on my deck this summer and they did beautiful...they are back in the house for the winter and doing well.....I live in WIsconsin, USA

The smooth, greasy green part on the inside of the skin is what you eat.

To make it a little more palatable, cut it in half, take out the shiny pit and chuck it. Remove the skin. Mash up the avocado with a small chopped tomato, a little red onion, a little garlic powder or paste, a little lime juice and a little salt. Or, you can cheat and just chuck in a spoonful of salsa. Spread it on crackers or eat it with tortilla chips.

Avocados are a bit odd at first, but I found that by the time I ate it a third time, I really loved it. If you like sushi, try buying some California rolls - they have avocados in them, and taste really good.

I rarely eat avocados plain.

To cut an avocado:
Take a big knife and cut in until you hit the pit. Then run the knife around in a circle, keeping contact with the pit, then pull the halves apart.

The pit will remain in one of the halves. You can either pull the pit out of that side, or stick the knife in it and use the knife to pull the pit out, or you can squeeze the avocado, and sometimes the pit will pop right out.

To remove the skin, you can run your finger under the skin, or you can lightly squeeze the flesh out of the skin. OR, if you know you'll need to DICE the avocado, you can carefully cut criss-cross cuts inside each half, then squeeze the skin, and all the diced pieces will just fall out!

Now for the ideas:

Here's an easy start: Dice the avocado, cover with bottled italian salad dressing, and eat on potato chips.

Guacamole: Mash an avocado with salt. Add the juice of 1/2 lime. Add a diced serrano chile, 2T finely chopped white onion, a diced small tomato, and 1/2 clove mashed garlic. Refrigerate 1 hour, then stir in 2T finely chopped fresh cilantro. Eat on tortilla chips or in burritos.

Those are the 2 ways I prepare avocados. We also use sliced avocados for condiments in salads, or on most spicy mexican chicken or bean dishes, or on spanish rice.

My husband is mexican, and we use avocados all the time.

You take the green part out from the skin. Start at the top(which is the funny looking end) and cut to the pit, then circle around the pit. A good way to eat it is slice it, but take the skin off, and put it on a chicken, or turkey sandwich with some bacon and ranch dressing. You can also mash it up with some lime juice, salt garlic, tomatoes, and some salt to make guacamole and have that with tortilla chips.

There's a peel and there is a seed. Cut in half around the seed discard the seed, scoop it out of the peel, cut into cubes and salt and pepper it and add a squeeze of lemon. Usually it's eaten as an accompaniment with other foods, you could mash it up and add jalapenos and tomatoes aka guacamole. If you don't like it you don't have to eat it.

OK, cut around pit, pop the pit out and then scoop out the green area around the skin. now you can do one of a few things. I like mine chopped up in a salad after this point. or you can mash up with some lime juice and hot pepper sauce for a nice dip for tortilla chips. check out more recipes for the stuff.

I feel avocadoes are more of a condiment veggie than anything. nice to be added to anything.

oh another good point to mention. like strawberries this doesn't stay good long after cutting. so use up as soon as possible.

I cut the avacado in half, then scoop out the pit with a spoon.
Next, scoop out the green part and mash it with a fork. I add a little salt and mix it some more. I then like to spread it on tortillas or on bread.
Remember: NEVER,NEVER eat avacado with milk.
You'll be kneeling at the "ceramic alter" yelling,"RALF"!!

I think they are soooooo lush, i love avacados. I cut it in half and take the stone out. I love nothing more than just sprinkling a bit of salt and pepper on the flesh, maybe a splash of lemon juice and eating it with a spoon on its own. Sooooooo nice as a snack!
