no the hd has no factor in whether or not it plays ps2 games.. if you need the space the hd is nessecery if you realy want your ps2 game return the ps3 40gb and buy the 80gb if possible.. :)

Sorry, but no. The size of the HDD is not the deciding factor on whether or not the ps3 is backwards compatible. They made the 40gb ps3 so that it would be cheaper, with this in mind, they took out the ability to read PS and PS2 games, sorry to say this, but you need a factory made 60gb or 80gb to be able to play the earlier generation of games.

No. It just gives you some extra space. Other PS3 versions can run PS2 games due to chips from PS2 (some of them one chip, some of them two). 40GB has none of them, so it can't play those games at all. But 40GB has a newer improved cooling system and it needs less electricity to run.

No you would need to purchase the PS3 80gb that is backwards compatible which is allowing you to play the PS2 games.

No. It's not the size of the hard drive that prevents you from being backwards compatible. The 40gig model does not have any of the semiconductors that are needed to play old ps2 titles.
