Honestly, I think the people who buy into this view of God, which many people do, are people who were raised to buy into it.
I know a guy who really thinks he's a sinner and that he has to believe that Jesus is God and this and that or else he'll be damned to hell, and he was raised with violent parents who taught him that he was wrong and bad by nature. So, he feels what he thinks is a natural guilt all the time. At the age of 21, he married a preacher's daughter and began attending church because she did, not because he was a christian, and then after years of this, it clicks for him: "Jesus can save me." But, that fits him. It works for how he was raised and how he feels about himself. And, for some christians, God is a mafia boss, but I doubt He/She is for all christians. Only the ones that that idea fits.
Where the rest of us who don't go for any of those views usually have problems is when these guys who the mob christianity fits start to get preachy and try to "save" us too. "Save me from what? There's not a tiger chasing me," I say. "Doesn't God love everybody?"

No. God is more like the government. You pay all this money to get some sort of service but the money goes towards whatever "people" decide to spend it on. There really is no singular tangible entity that is the government just a bunch of people claiming to have the authority to wield its power.
