NOT ONLY DO I KNOW WHAT THIS IS, I'VE DONE IT FOR SOME OF MY PATIENTS.
ITS NOT PAINFUL BECAUSE YOU'RE GIVEN ANESTHETIC FOR THIS.
IT'S NOT ANY MORE PAINFUL THAN DOING A SURGICAL
TOOTH EXTRACTION.
WHAT'S INVOLVED IS TRIMMING A LITTLE BONE AROUND A TOOTH AND PLACING STITCHES AROUND THE TOOTH WHERE THE CUTS WERE MADE INTO THE GUM.
IT'S MORE ACCURATELY KNOWN AS GINGIVAL LOWERING BECAUSE IT'S BIOLOGICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO ACTUALLY MAKE THE CROWN OF A TOOTH LONGER. WHAT IS DONE IS THAT THE GUMS ARE LOWERED SO THAT THE CROWN CAN BE PROPERLY PLACED ON THE TOOTH.

The periodontist will "trim" down the gum line to make available more tooth surface to use to put a crown on. THink of it as a tree stump that is cut at the level of the ground. If there still tree under the ground, you can dig up the dirt and expose the tree that is under there.
To be completely honest with you, it is not the most pleasant procedure to have done. You will be numb during it, so you won't have any pain while having it done. You wil be in pain after, but the doctor will give you pain meds and antibiotic. You will probably be uncomfortable for a week or so, but with every day it will get better.
Good luck, it is really a good decision to have it done, that way the tooth can be properly restored.

I was searching with the same question you are asking and came across your posting.
How painful is it???
I am having a Crown Lengthening this Friday and am very nervous! My periodontist is giving me a drug to relax me 1 hour before the procedure but its the post surgery I'm worried about. I have put this off for years because I've been so afraid.
They are giving me ibuprofen and Darvet (sp?) as well as a mouth rinse and antibiotics post surgery.

I will try to post this weekend and let you know how it was first hand. I'm praying that I'm going to be able to say that "It wasn't so bad."
