No, I am not musli9m, but my Muslim frinds say they don't really understand it either. Is this a Muslim, or Sudan thing?

If Muslim, are YOU offended. If so, why?

Does the infraction deserve 40 lashes or beheading?

I just don't get it.

I am Muslim, and no I don't think they should make such a big deal over such a little thing.

I believe that the intentions of the woman were clean.

She does not deserve a punishment, only someone to respectfully explain to her that some people might not take the idea well.

Its politics - The Sudanese want to stop UN troops invading Darfur so this is a suitable case to whip up.

It is funny to hear the perpetators of Guantanomo talk about human rights.

Followers of other religions get offended all the time -Catholics got the BBC show popetown banned, Sikhs attacked a UK theatre showing a play they didnt like, Hindufascists attacked painter MF Hussain for painting one of their "gods" nude and Jews are notoriuos for getting any comments about the holocaust banned

"Does the infraction deserve 40 lashes or beheading?"

beheading was never on the agenda; and the lashes were the most strict available punishment. In the end she got 15 days and will be released soon (more that can be said for Guantanomites) -thanks to British Muslim politicans. You really need to stop having Fox News as a brain

The reason it's a 'big deal' is that once again Islam is being its own worst enemy, convincing the West that it's completely deranged.

The fact is, though, that despite the complaints by moderate Muslims that the Sudanese are backward extremists, this really is the sort of madness that happen in a theocracy.

Nor should other religions feel too smug at the egg on Islam's face over this: if they had their way we'd soon be back in the Dark Ages of Christian theocracy, where punishments for minor blasphemy were no less disgusting.

Religion will do this sort of thing to people.

It isn't neccesarily a Muslim thing...it is a fundamentalist Muslim thing.

The toy was named after a child in the class who was doing well. The child's name was Muhammed. Fundamentalist have ZERO sense of humor, compassion.

A teddy bear is a toy and mohammad is anything but to believers. Its a way to show intolerance to us outsiders who might dare to dismiss the importance of their religion. Just like their insane response to that cartoon last year, they don't want their beliefs ridiculed or even toyed with. We see this sort of response rverywhere, just not as violent, but it shows a hugh insecurity possessed by the believer.

It's pretty much a Sudan thing. The government is trying to appeal to its base.

My understanding is that the "protesters" who were screaming for the teacher's death were government employees ordered to stage the performance. Does anyone have any information confirming or denying this?

Information...not opinions.

Since Mohammed is like Jesus to Christians. It would be like someone naming something Jesus.

Plus the bear is mentioned in Bible and Quran as being the bad thing. Naming a bad thing with a Holy name just is wrong.

Its a slap in the face is what it is. It might not offend all, but it does some. And care should be taken with such things.

If someone goes around the USA saying he is God, do we not lock them up and say they are mental?

40 lashes is their punishment, not our place to dictate the laws of other countries as its not their place to dictate our laws to us.

First of all, it is stated in Islam, that you must NOT show the face of the Prophet Muhammad in drawings or movies etc. This is to ensure that he is never worshiped as Jesus was, he was a mortal man. The Muslims believe he was the best man to ever live, giving his holy name to a toy is considered a disgusting act.

something about lashes, yes she deserves them, but i will tell you this, that lashes in the east is not that of the west. Its not grab a whip and start beating, you must have your elbow touching your hip at all times while swinging, and with a Qur'an in your hand, as you can imagine it is less painful that an overhead swing.

I think this is one GIANT misunderstanding.. of what Islam teaches.

I don't understand it, this is most definitley an "underdeveloped country" thing, not an Islam thing.
And I think Muslims are getting a bad rep for it, when all the ones I know don't condone or agree with it.

According to the Koran Mohammed is the last great prophet. So if you use his name for a teddy bear that is an extreme offense to Islam and will not be tolerated. (Islam does not bow to American "tolerance" or "politically correct" dogma). Anyone or thing that offends Mohammed or Allah must be annihilated at any cost.
