No, I don't think monogamy is a behavior that comes naturally to us; instead, I think it's a learned behavior that we embrace (with varying success) when we've found a person we want to be with for the rest of our lives. Some people don't permit themselves to fall in love and end up jumping from one person to the next -- until one day, they wake up and realize they're old and alone.
There are too many causes for promiscuity to name them here. But my guess is that the top two are: 1) in younger people, simple physical desire & the need to experience life without attachments; and 2) the conscious or subconscious desire to avoid an intimate relationship, because of a deep seated fear of rejection.

Seriously, I do not believe that most humans are monogamous. I do not agree with your word''promiscuous'' . This would be used only if humans are naturally monogamous.

To an extent, maybe ... because even people who have promiscuous sex sometimes still have some form of constant partner ... even if they're cheating on that partner.
I think its human nature to want to have your cake and eat it too -- to not have to experience loneliness and always have someone beside you, while being able to "play the field" as well.

Hell no and Christians who think this clearly didn't read their little bibles. Many of the men had multiple wifes and harems. Oh and one time God even instructed the men before a battle once that the men after they defeated the enemy could have their way with the woman afterwards.
Edit: Well Suzanne if you'd kindly bend over, I will kindly kiss you touche unless you've been a bad girl then I'd spank
Edit: I'll give you a thumbs up for being so funny and you made a good point Suzanne.

not as such. I think it is primarily a social construct, a compromise to facilitate peaceful interaction.
I think people vary significantly in how inherently monogamous they are. Some are very much so, while others are more inclined to stray... a combination of nature and nurture factors.

People seem to vary as to how monogamous they are.
'Naturally'? Dunno. There's evidence both ways, as far as how our ancestors were.
A lot of people have promiscuous sex because they aren't in serious relationships. Some cheat because their relationships aren't working. Others just 'cause.

I believe that nature intended us to be monogamous because there are about equal numbers of male and female babies born . People cheat because of lust . They know it isn't proper when they do it .

I think there are very few things that are natural about the way we live. We are socially constructed beings. We often live according to the values of the society in which we are raised.

I don't know about naturally. In my case, I have a good mate and we have enjoyed forty plus years together. It has been great. I am not now, nor was I ever, going to defecate in this nest for a little strange. That would be crazy.
