Hey, all women do this. Without it there would be no babies.

Leviticus 15

And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean.

[2:222] They ask you about menstruation: say, "It is harmful; you shall avoid sexual intercourse with the women during menstruation; do not approach them until they are rid of it. Once they are rid of it, you may have intercourse with them in the manner designed by GOD. GOD loves the repenters, and He loves those who are clean."

OBVIOUSLY, women are certainly held in low esteem.

How could any woman worship a god that supposedly said that?

I read a book about this a couple years ago.
The theory is that, as a ritual, witches would have sex with men while menstruating in the light of the full moon and then they sometimes killed the man as a sacrifice. It was thought that sex was far more pleasurable during menses for both parties and that the men who were killed sometimes went willingly, but not always. Then when Christianity came along, everything about the larger old religions was made to be evil. Another example of this is how the devil is portrayed as looking like Pan, a much loved goat-like god. It's a strategy used often to get more followers and, hence more power, money, and control. The number 13 being unlucky is another example of this. There are 13 moon cycles in a solar calender and years ago 13 was a favored number, even to the point where a coven of witches consisted of 1 leader or icon and 12 followers, and now 13 has been an "evil" number for generations. hmm

This all may have been written (remember that back then women were more or less slaves to men) as a wake up call to mortals to realize that maybe their perceptions of life, which did include respect for a woman or her needs, were wrong and so it was really addressing much more than just the functions of the human system. It was pushing thought toward spiritual perception as the reality in a small degree, but the human thought can't digest too much all at once. We are still not out of the "dark" age, as evidenced by many religious beliefs fueled by hand me down doctrine for its justification. Anyway, to take writings for face value or literally can leave one in a state of amazement, if not confused as well.

The Quran stole the idea from our Torah, apparently without understanding what it meant.

In Judaism, it is not the woman herself who becomes unclean, it is the death inside of her of the egg. Dead people, in Judaism, are unclean. The egg is a potential person, and when it dies, does not get fertilized, it becomes unclean.

This is what is unclean. not the woman herself. When the woman is finished menstruating, she goes and immerses into the mikvah in order to spiritually cleanse the death that was within her.

Most people who don't know any Orthodox religious Jews have never bothered to find out any of this, they just go around spouting that God hates women, or that women are devalued, without any understanding of OUR book and what the REAL meanings are. So now you know. At least about this one.

Source: Torah, Judaism

P.S. Oh, and by the way, none of that ever applied to non-Jews, the Church lies when it says that our laws applied to non-Jews but Jesus freed them from it. You cannot be freed from something you were never bound by - nothing to free you FROM. There were never any penalties nor punishments for non-Jews who did not abide by the laws in the Torah, because the laws didn't apply to them. Except, of course, for the 7 Noahide Laws, please see:

Leviticus is addressing the law of the nation of Israel to uphold the people of Israel as a holy people chosen by God, thus such rules were put in place to ensure that things associated with the temple, priests, and other sacred things and acts were kept pure and holy.

I know I feel unclean after menstruating, urinating, or defecating.
That's why I don't wear the same underwear every day.

Um. I think "Momof7" fails to compute. The metaphor button in her medulla oblongata has been turned to the "off" position.

Why people continue to believe in the man-made concepts of god and the reward/punishment system of heaven and hell is beyond me. Even those who believe we can all get to heaven, while far easier to talk to and usually capable of greater empathy, are only telling a nicer fiction. Why any woman would choose to believe in a misogynistic god who (in all his omniscience) cannot even comprehend the bodily functions he 'gave' to his creations utterly stumps me. This is where I find religion dangerous. The person above me is right. You'll get a lot of the "Oh, but that was the OLD Testament stuff" thrown back in your face because of pure ignorance. Not only are both gods one and the same ANY entity that would murder infants and children, stone women and claim to be "righteous" must automatically be relegated to serial killer status.

It's sweet and sometimes harmless to believe in nice things, like that God and Jesus came to spread love. In doing so, however, one must completely ignore the written accounts of God's transcriptors who are quite clear in their explanations of HIS bidding. God was at best a dictatorial murderer according to Biblical accounts. Interpretation cannot change this however hard one may try.

These rules were for hygienic purposes. Along with rules about what not to eat and what to do if one had leprosy, among many others.
That's why God's people were usually free from the diseases that other nations had. Women didn't have the things we have today to keep our menstruation under sanitary control.

Most religions are patriarchal and were more or less invented by men. How many men do you know that aren't skeeved out -- at least to a certain extent -- by the crimson tide?

If women had invented religion, it would probably be "unclean" to adjust your crotch in public.

As a native american, we too are very cautious with menstrating women, we do not chastise them we honor them with their own space, the lack of chores, the ability to honor their speciala gifts without the interferrance of children, cooking, gathering, parents, family, friends.
Christian religions tend to supress females, just look at the history. How many thousands of women were murdered during the inquisition? Christian religions are male dominanted and as such must control women.
Lets face it, if a man bled like a woman he would be dead, that strikes fear in the mind of most men. Instead of honoring women, like they did before Christ, BC time periods, they fear them and as such try to control them.
Good luck with your personal beliefs, you will need to think long and hard about how you will look upon this normal, wonderful aspect of feminity.

In reference to this:

I discussed this with my fiance. Most people take it way out of hand, by sleeping in separate beds and not touching the woman at all. But the reality is, the Quran just says to abstain from sex, but you can still kiss and touch and do whatever you please with your partner during it. It's to avoid hurting the woman, I know that it would really hurt me to have sex during my period.

OT God had the mentality of a spoiled four year old, and menstruation is icky--imagine how icky it was before pads were invented--unclean would have been an understatement
