what about cheerios?

Yeah some are like grape nuts, total, and even cheerios. The thing is you really need to look and see what the correct serving size is when you go to eat a bowl of cereal. The average serving is about 1 to 1/2 cup. Most people eat about twice to three times the amount of cereal they should. That's why cereal is fattening. While it will be high in fiber it is also high in sugar or carbohydrates. So make sure you just eat the correct amount. =)

It depends on the cereal. If it contains whole grains as the first ingredient, and no corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, no partially or fully hydrogenated oils and no artificial flavors or colors, then I buy it. Sadly, there aren't many out there that do not have these ingredients. Many of the cereals that claim to be healthy contain this junk. Smart Start, for instance, claims to be very healthy, yet it has nine listings of sugar in its listing. Only two of those are not corn syrup or HFCS. It also contains partially hydrogenated oils and artificial colors and flavors. Doesn't sound healthy to me. (It says it has whole oats and potassium which, according to the American Heart Association can help with the heart. Okay. That might be true, so why is all of the other junk needed?) About the only cereals I buy are Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios or the store equivalent. I do have some raisin bran, which has corn syrup in it, but I do not eat it often, maybe once a week. (The brand I have is more bran than raisin, so I just add some more raisins in it.)

If the cereal has more than 10 grams of sugar, I do not buy it, or if I do, I don't eat it daily.

Like everything else, it comes down to reading labels. However, the Kashi and Cascadian Farms brands are whole and real and yummy.

No, not really. Most cereals out there are full of sugar or additives which make them taste so good. but, believe it or not there are a few out there that may not be as bad, but I'm sorry to say Cheerios is not one of them!

Some cereals are, some aren't. It depends what is in them. Cheerios, wheaties, and some raisin brands are, for example. Coco puffs, lucky charms, cap'n crunch cereals, not so much. It also depends on the milk you eat the cereal with....is it skim milk (good for you), or whole milk (pretty fatty), or something in between?

In America they tend to teach kids that comercial cerial is good for you. "carbs are good for you, it's the best source of energy," they say, but it can be misleading. Yes, it's true carbohydrates are one of the healthies sources of energy but remember what makes it healthy is the way the body breaks it down. All carbs can be broken down to it's sugar state such as fructose, glucose, sucrose. The closer and closer it is to the sugar state the less your body needs to digest it which means less energy will be used. This sort of defeats the purpose of eating carbs! Cereal is good for you but try and go for the more wholesome cereals that people used to eat in the old days. Old fashioned oatmeal, wheat germ, wheat bran, need to be digested down by your body and are great alternative to the already highly processed comercial ones.

Most cereals are not. They have tons of sugar. Just read the ingredients. You should make your own cereal with oats, raisins and other dried fruits.

Yes, very healthy. They help with lowering cholesterol. Low in sugar and they are the first finger food for young children learning how to grasp small items and to feed themselves.
