Those who do not run an unpaid ministry seem to skip the verses that support it. Most famous is 1 Corinthians 9:18:
"What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel."
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka Mormons) is the only church I know of worldwide that has an unpaid ministry: that means that everyone from the president down to the people who clean bathrooms are volunteers.
The money goes where the person tithing directs it to go on their tithing form: missionary work, humanitarian work, construction, etc.
(The strip mall mentioned by another answerer is an investment in downtown SLC from which financial and civic benefirts are anticipated. None of the profit goes to church leaders)
I was raised as a Baptist, but left when I saw a pastor wearing a purple mink coat and driving a Bentley, among other things.

Money goes to various items. Lights, utilities, workers salaries, discresionary funds for people that come to the Church for assistance, building maintance, general improvements. Certain parts are earmarked for specific charities or support programs.
the only gas priests get is only mileage reimbursement at the federal rate for miles driven in relation to official duties just like every other employee in the Church or most organizations. Most priests do not drive SUVs either they are to expensive. Honda Civics and Accords as well as Toyota Camry are the most popular models it seems among the clergy. Most Churches barely cover the basics required to run.

Tithes were paid by the Israelites. Christians are told to give as they have received on the first day of the week. Those monies have specific boundaries that MOST churches adhere to. Some seem to ignore parts of the Biblical message. Have a wonderful week to come.

There are three tithes mentioned in the bible. The first went for support of the Levites who took care of the religious end of things. The second was for expenses and sacra fices at the Feast of Tabernacles, The third was for widows and orphans and was paid only every third year.

In my church the tithe goes to the general expenses of the church as salaries of the and church building costs etc. Then we have additional offerings to the missions and so on.
I do not see any problem if ministers buy gasoline with their salary. Silly thought even to think they do not need gasoline. SUV or regular car, a personal choice.

squid....the money to buy the mall didn't come from the tithing funds.
From www.lds.org:
"Tithing funds are always used for the Lord's purposes—to build and maintain temples and meetinghouses, to sustain missionary work, to educate Church members, and to carry on the work of the Lord throughout the world."

Yep, among other things. Pastor Ted Haggard of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs used tithing money on male prostitutes and meth. The Mormon church recently bought a strip mall in Salt Lake City to the tune of $1 BILLION. The Catholic church uses tithing money to pay of the families of children raped by priests, among other things.
L. Ron Hubbard said it best: "If you want to get rich, start your own religion."
