I am in outside sales, and it seems I spend more time in my car than anywhere else.
A GPS is great, but most salespeople have a Blackberry, Treo, etc. that all offer GPS/mapping services. If for some reason he doesn't, you can easily find these devices at retailers. Just be prepared to pay $200+ for one of them.
For the books on tape/CD, I'd check out BooksFree. It's basically Netflix for books. He can add items to his wish list, and when he returns one, they send the next one. They are now offering gift services, and you can pay for his membership for 1 to 6 months in advance!!

Finally, I truly recommend a satellite radio... if he doesn't have one. My husband bought me an XM radio about 4 years ago, when satellite radio first began. I still listen to it 90% of the time when I'm driving from account to account. Units can be purchased from $39 to $200.

A GPS navigator, like Tom Tom or Garmin or something. That way he will spend less time getting to his destinations because he'll always have good directions. You can get them at Best Buy or any other electronics store.
