This verse always make me think of evolutionists.

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

2 Timothy 4:3-4

This is one of the verses that alienated me when I was studying. My mom had told me that reading the Pauline Epistles would really help me to feel connected with God. I'm afraid that just wasn't the case.

Also, I don't think a lot of people are getting the point of what you said, although I think that it is very clear.

Sounds like modern religious types. Rather than follow what their religion tells them to, they choose instead to believe what they want and merely use their religion to back them up, ignoring anything that contradicts them.

Look at Westboro Baptist Church for an extreme example of this.

I seriously doubt it prophesised a time when non-believers would exist as they existed at the time and prior to the time that the line was written.

No, it makes me think of all the false and popular religions in the world, especially those that are led by charismatic leaders, and New Age religions -- teaching false christs and false gospels.

"Evolutionist" isn't a word.

Also, many Christians accept evolution. Not everyone who accepts the findings of science is an atheist bent on eradicating religion's presence in society.

Sounds more like Christians to me. They only hear what they want to hear and often completely disregard the actual truth.
