I had to wait a month to claim unemployment because I received my last weeks pay and then a severance package. The unemployment people took that into consideration and said I got nothing until all monies owed to me were paid and then they started paying.

As far as I know they will not back-pay you unless you have a case and a hearing in the works for judgment and you win the case.

That is why it is recommended one has 3-6 months living expenses in cash in the bank to cover you in case of injury or job loss.

If you want to know for sure you should call your state's unemployment office and ask them. It may take a while to get through all the automated stuff and talk to a real person but you'd at least get an answer from someone who knows all the rules and could help you.

Massachusetts gives the employer time to verify that you were eligible to receive unemployment benefits. I think the amount of time is 15 days, but I could be wrong. If the employer does not respond within the time period given, the unemployment office bases their decision on the facts that you gave them. Benefits are paid retroactive to the week when you were eligible to receive benefits.

Massachusetts has a one week waiting period for which no benefits are paid.

If you received any severance pay or vacation pay, you will have to wait to receive benefits.

Example: You are laid off and receive 4 weeks of severance pay. You would have to wait 5 weeks to start receiving your benefits.

Usually you don't get paid unemployment comp for the first week you are off, but you'll most likely get payment for the other weeks included in your first check.
