My friends hair is black with dark reddish orange highlights and its called auburn.

Evidently. You just did. If you are looking for an example, Bozo the Clown comes to mind. By the way, the color is not auburn. Auburn hair is a dark brunette, with subtle red highlights.

I think that this sounds too orangy to be auburn or chestnut.

chest·nut (chsnt, -nt) n. A dark reddish brown

Your definition may be closer!
