Some women start crying because frankly it just plain hurts. Why wouldn't a guy want to be a woman's friend any longer? Is it because the guy wanted more? I am not sure going by your question what the problem was. A lot of people put much time and energy into friendships and it is hard to find a good friend to be there for you whether it be male or female. When the person says or does something to make it known that it is over, it becomes overwhelmingly devasting sometimes. We all have feelings and crying is a normal emotion that both genders experience.

Women are generally more emotional than men, and ending a friendship is a time of hurt and stress for them. Especially if is is percieved as mean-hearted or unexpected, the lady is going to probably feel betrayed and lonely when a good friend leaves them. Whether the friend is male or female, they are losing someone they liked to spend time with, so it's going to upset them at least a little.

They are upset because they feel rejected. Tears are a way of releasing this emotion.

Simple. It's a rejection and no one, regardless of gender, likes to be rejected.
