chances of losing luggage?

Hi, I will be departing from CA long beach airport to Salt Lake City in Utah. But there is one stop at Phoenix for 2 hours and obviously switch plane. What is the chance of losing my luggage??? I am so nervous and lost because I have never been on an airplane anywhere!! I'm lost.I don't know where to go, and about getting the luggage etc etc. Please give me some advice! tahnks

So when I get off the plane, where will my luggage be at the phoenix stop?? DO they give instructions on intercom?? Do they tell you where to go exactly? Geeze hopefully nervous and I'm 20 years old! I have navy blue luggage and with neon green tsa locks. I'm thinking about putting colorful ribbons or something??

1. Know your airline - There are ways to check the percentage of lost luggage from an airline by scouring online forums about travel. You can also look at travel review sites to get recommendations as well.
2. Get to the airport on time - When you make the airlines rush to get your bags onto the plane, you can make it much easier for your bag to not quite make it. Follow the airlines rules for arriving at the airport on time.
3. Get a brightly coloured bag - It’s a lot harder for a bag to become misplaced in a luggage cart when it’s bright and easy to distinguish from the others. Nearly everyone’s bags are black, so try to make yours stand out.
4. Or you can add something to a black bag - Try adding a coloured ribbon or piece of masking tape to your bag to draw attention to it. This will also help when you’re standing at the baggage claim and trying to find your bag amongst the sea of black.
5. Use approved locks on your luggage - If the airline needs to cut your luggage lock apart in order to properly screen it, you might be increasing your chances of lost luggage. You can find these approved locks at a number of local retailers. The airlines have a master key to open them and then re-secure them.
6. Don’t leave anything valuable in your checked bags - Sad to say, but when you have a bag that is filled with expensive things, you might be setting yourself up for your bag to become ‘lost.’ Just recently in the news, baggage handlers had stolen a number of bags and then threw them out when they had been rifled through - don’t let that happen to you.
7. Make sure your bag is clean and presentable - Bags that seem to be falling apart or are in disrepair can signal to a baggage carrier that they might be something suspicious, thus delaying its arrival at your destination.
8. Keep a copy of your final destination in your checked bag - This will alert the baggage handlers as to where to send your bag once it is found.
9. Limit your stopovers - When you have several stops along the way on your trip, it increases the chances of lost luggage. Try to go non-stop if you can.
10. Don’t check any luggage - The easiest way to keep your luggage from becoming lost is to never let it out of your sight.

The first thing is I never been overseas, I mean America or somewhere on those continents. However I traveled from Kazakhstan to different places, starting from UK and Switzerland ending in China and Malaysia. I never had my lagguage lost. The worst thing I had is luggage delay, because when I traveled from Switzerland back home via Frankfurt my transit time was only 45 minutes. The luggage was only late to my flight and was sent the next day and I received it. The reason for delay was that it was snowboard and it is oversized. However rest of my lagguage, which was a huge suitcase i received instantly. Also it depends on your flight operator.

I'm leaving on a flight at the end of this week that also has a layover. Don't sweat about losing your luggage. It doesn't happen that often. I have never lost anything before.

So my bag doesn't get mistaken for someone else's bag, I have a brightly colored (neon) piece of rope tied to it in an intricate knot. That way it can be seen when I get my luggage and it would take a magician to get the darn rope off the bag LOL.

But some kind of marking on it. What I have on all my suitcases is a bright blue ribbon and a bright yellow one. Even if someone takes it at the luggage pick up, you will still be able to see that someone has it. This actually happened to me and I went over and got my suitcase from someone's pile. And remember, terminals are built for people like you. Just look around for signs, then if that doesn't work a map, and if that doesn't work someone who works there. Lastly, if you never get your luggage, the airport WILL find it for you (as long as you have your name on one of those cards with phone, address, and name) and send it to you.

Some good advice here. I would add that you should keep a watchful eye on bag when you check it in to assure that it's being tagged to the correct destination.

If it gets lost, the airline will deliver it to you at your destination. Be sure to have a piece of paper *inside* the bag with that info, as tags can get lost.

Add: You don't need to worry about the bag in Phoenix; it will be checked through to Utah.

It's just a chance you'll have to take. Alot of people loose their luggage, but not everyone. We should try to go through life without worrying about every little thing that "Could Happen." Life is risky. You take a chance every time you leave your house. Relax, don't be such a worry-wart.

My best advice is do not worry about losing your luggage. The chance is very, very slim and even if they did lose your luggage there is a good chance they will find it and send it to your hotel or whereever you are staying. Relax and enjoy your trip.

make sure when u check in your bags are tagged to your final destination. Also put on you name tag with your contact information, just in case it gets misplace. There is no guarantee that your bag will make your flight. Good luck.

I don't think you would lose custody entirely but you might not be able to move and partially lose custody
