My friend and I are interested in starting a coomuntiy service project. Any ideas? How do we get funding?

Why do you need funding? And when you say you want to start a community service project, do you mean you want to volunteer together for a cause, or, that you want to form an organization together that provides some sort of service?
As it sounds like you're both young, I would suggest you go the route of volunteering, to get more experience in community service, the needs of your community and your own interests. VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. These are great places to look for volunteering opportunities.

first you have to assess a need that your community has that it not being taken care of. Then you have to get grants or sponsors in the community to fund the project. An easy one to do is a clean up project of a park, vacant lot or even a stream or river.

Look into The Pencil Project. It's easy, fun and rewarding. You can help a school at a local level or one overseas.
