My auntie bought my brother this HUGE cookbook. It's called "1000 Best Recipes" and all the food in there looks so good.He made a good tasting cake before, but his cheese and potatoes were gross. He just needs better experience.

I must have 500 cookbooks so choosing just one is difficult because they each serve a different purpose but I can tell you that the 2-volume set of the Art of French Cooking really started my collection and encouraged me to cook as well as I do.

For general cooking techniques, I'd say buy either James Beard's "Theory & Practice of Good Cooking" or Irma S. Rombauer's "Joy of Cooking"! For recipes of all types, including recipes from other nations, nothing compares to the series of cook books, compiled and sponsored by the Military Officers' Wives Clubs (Favorite Recipe Press, Montgomery, Alabama).

The New Basics cookbook is my all time favorite and most used. It has recipes that span from easy to elegant, plus it has roasting charts, veggie and herb charts, wine suggestions - all kinds of extra info. It has a lot of classic recipes, but it also has a lot of fresh ideas!

Mine is Autumn in Piemonte: Food and Travels in Italy's Northwest. My wife is an Italian chef and we live in Italy so know a thing or two about good food and this is the best

I put together a list of some of the other Italian cookbooks that are exceptional on my blog - http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/italian-food-books.html

Out of all mine, I have 4 favorites. But the absolute best one is the Better Homes & Gardens one. The one with the plaid cover. It basically taught me how to cook. I also have my mom's from the 60's, one from the early 90's, and one from just a few years ago. They're all informative, have great recipes, and it's interesting to see how recipes have evolved over the years.

Betty Crocker, given to me as a wedding gift in 1985. I go to it for alot of just general recipes and I must say I use it the most as a cooking or recipe reference book.

There are 2. One was "Mrs. Rasmussen's Book of One-Arm Cookery", which dispenses good recipes with good sense. The other is "Joy of Cooking", which is the best reference recipe book out there.
